A few days ago, i was listening to the radio and hearing folks reaction to the New York Times about how Americans are generally hostile towards intelligence. Granted, having been shoved in a locker or two, i'd really love to violently agree with this.
i mean, it's right. Folks aren't really that fond of folks that are viewed as "smarter" than them. They're not fond of folks that are stronger either, only they're more likely able to beat up the nerds than the jocks. Nerds are an easy target. What's more, they tend to make themselves easy targets too. Nerds usually lack political savvy. They don't know how to make friends. In many respects, they don't actually do a lot to garner respect.
It's getting better, mind you. Geeks are getting a bit more respect as more and more geeks are coming out of the cubicle, but the problem is that they still aren't doing much to garner as much respect as they could. They're trying, and doing some damn good things, but it takes time to do it well and convince folks why being smart is good and admirable. Convince folks that being one of those "elite intellectuals" isn't a bad thing, since they're the ones that actually solve more problems than the folks trying desperately not to be one.
Respect, after all, should never be given. Only earned.
You know, when you were a baby in your crib, your father looked down at you, he had but one hope - some day my son will grow to be a man. Well look at you now. You just got your asses whipped by a bunch of goddamn nerds.
Nerds! Well, if I was you, I'd do something about it. I would get up and redeem myself in the eyes of my father, my maker, and my coach!
