Quick! What's the one thing that every website you've ever been to tells you never to do with your password?
Well, good thing that for $9 you can completely ignore that advice.
(This, obviously, is the gift to give folks who haven't figured out how to turn on the password keeper built into their browser, or learned how to create .txt files, or…)
A couple points in its favor:
There's no way to read it unless you have physical access (unlike, say, the browser's password keeper or a .txt file, which might in theory be cracked remotely).
It's not physically affixed to the computer (unlike the typical assortment of post-its), and could be stored in a locked desk drawer.
It subtly encourages use of different passwords for different services (wouldn't you feel silly writing the same password on every page?).
There's something to be said for the "put all your eggs in one basket, and take really good care of that basket" approach to security.
So this is basically the executive version of that piece of paper I have in my room labelled "S00P3R S3Kr1T P4SSW0rDZ - D0 N0t ST34L!!1!". Awesome.
Jeremy: Good points. I'd agree with you except that I feel that phishing is currently the worst problem facing passwords. One thing that auto-remembered passwords do get you is that folks hesitate when they don't see those boxes automatically filled in. (Non techie relatives actually paused and said "Oh, what went wrong. Hey, that's not the right address for paypal!")
I'd much rather folks grab a copy of SecurePassword and then use something like Weave to keep things synced and backed up.
Sadly, social tends to trump secure, but if you can compromise, you're still pretty well off.
I've been thinking about writing a Facebook app which shows you how many other people use the same password as you so that you can add them as friends.
I would actually buy this if it had a "Best Raisin Recipes of 1973" book jacket.
It's huge! How the heck am I supposed to tape that to the bottom of my keyboard!?
