:: Dear Office IT Guy

At my wife's job, they run IE7 and employees are forbidden from upgrading.

Dear Office IT guy,
Let me put this in a way you might understand:

This is your office LAN:

It's your castle and fortress, filled with your companies treasures. You work hard to make sure it's secure.

This is your brower:

It stands, with sword in hand, against the forces that seek to damage your castle.

Sadly, this is what you're up against.

Your knight may have once been the ultimate defender, but progress marches on. Now, he's just a glittery bit of crumpled road-kill.

At one time, your browser was sufficient to do battle and defend. It isn't anymore, and frankly poses a significant risk to your company's assets. In fact, when the company that wrote it actively encourages you to upgrade you should.

Yes, it means doing work. That's why they hired you.
Yes, it means answering stupid questions. That's why they hired you.
Yes, it means updating specifications, documentation, protocols, and other paperwork. That's why they hired you.

You don't have to upgrade everyone's OS to run a modern browser. There are lots of free, competent browsers out there. (Full Disclosure, i work for one.)

Still, if you're quite confident that there's nothing of actual value stored on your intranet, by all means continue to run the old browser version.
