:: Working at Home

There's a fairly thick pile of virtually crumpled papers sitting in my little digital trash can, each and every one born out of a few stolen moments of boredom. None of these will or even should see the light of day. It's one of the reasons that i don't like posting small bits, instead posting up stuff that is larger and reasonably better thought out.

i think i figured out my problem, and it took getting mildly hooked to CoH to do it.

The deal is that i've decided that i'm going to try to spend an hour a day writing. Granted, not all of that time is going to be devoted to punching keys and building storyline, some of it is going to be good ol' fashioned head pounding and rejecting dumber ideas in favor of the truly moronic ones.

i'm thinking that the problem has been that my traditional habit of spending all day pounding out a batch of pages just wasn't working because i'd goof off most of the time and then spend far too long panicking just to get something out that i wasn't really happy about.

i came to this conclusion because i realized that while CoH is a horrific amount of fun for me (Salad Barbarian up to Level 5 on Pinnacle and is kicking asparagus), what's making it fun is that i spend some time tweaking, then spend the rest in fits of wanton destruction punctuated by trying to pick up Big Stone Lady in Atlas Park, and confusing the hell out of the other l33t d00dz.

How did that help? Well, i realized that if i were to play it more than a few hours, as fun as it may be, it's pretty dull. Well, that and that Salad Barbarian need make friends if Salad Barbarian want to get ahead in world. So i spent a few hours writing, and then off doing something else. It's really nice. What's particularly nice about it is that i get to look forward to finishing a thought as well as add a few new ones to the mix. Things just flow better.

Granted, this would not be the tactic i'd take if i were a professional, but i'm not, so it works out great, and i'm not continually keeping one eye on the clock.

Particularly since those little clockwork guys are a major pain.

    Actually pros do do that-believe it or not. Many pro writers started off in the gamig industry, and still take inspiration from it-Take Michael A. Stackpole for one.

    If you just let the monkey drink the whiskey, you'd be surprised at how often these problems self-regulate.

:: … Only Terrorists Will Play Bridge

i remember watching Jay on "That's Incredible" whipping cards with deadly accuracy. It was pretty damn impressive, and worthy of some serious comic book type action.

i spent a few weeks trying to figure out how to do it myself but just wound up getting a few fluttering cards to slide down behind the sofa.

Now i just get the feeling that The Magistrate Department of Homeland Security will start running folks in for unlicensed pinochle parties.

You refused to play a spades queen trump? That's Unamerican, Gran'ma!

    Watch Jackie Chan's "City Hunter"! You'll know why when you see it.
