On one of my mailing lists, they're talking about an external firewire drive that is rather nice looking, one of the big drawbacks being that the case isn't openable (so it's effectively just a very pretty 40GB drive).
Yeah, it looks nice, but i'm not going to get one.
You see, if i'm going to go get a "brick". by God, i'm going to get a brick.
As in a 120GB drive housed in a brick.
As in the reddish brown, clay based, heavy weight, course bugger that leaves dust and scratches. The sort of brick one normally associates with mortar.
Oh, sure, there might be some issues with cooling (seeing how wrapping a drive in something that insulating might be an issue) , and it might be a bit prone to damage if dropped, but just think how cool it would be to see everyone else take out their wimpy little geek fashion statements and you whunk that bugger onto the desktop.
What's better is that years from now, when the drive fails, you've got something you can build a driveway out of.
i tell you, i'd make a million.
