:: Dad's Birthday Griefed

My Dad's 75th birthday is coming up, and as per suggestions from Mom, my brother and i are getting him stuff to go out and walk with. Chris (the outdoorsy, non-technical, and otherwise healthy one of the two of us) is going to REI to load up on walking sticks, a camel pack, and other things so that he can conquer the great well known around the complex.

Being the near polar opposite of my brother, my job is to get the media player because one can only take so much of the all natural sounds of pigeons and tires on asphalt before one starts looking for alternate source of entertainment. Granted, it's not like my Dad's looking to load up on Basement Jaxx or The Dropkick Murphys (although i suspect a fair lot of Chieftans may show up on it), but i do suspect that a number of audio books, and a few regular podcasts would wind up on there.

Did i mention that i'm the geek of the family? Of the members of my nuclear group, i'm fairly certain that i'm the only one that i'm the only one that would get a joke about not being sure if i should feed or bury the cat so i did both and was right. (And that other one about two UDP packets walking into a bar? Total lost cause.)

i'm also guessing that there are a few podcasts that he'd be interested in.

So, let's work out the details, shall we?

  1. Not a nerd.
  2. Needs audiobook capability
  3. Easy to get podcasts (considering the source material, major consideration).
  4. Big, readable screen equally big, readable controls.

That reduced the list down to two. Then i thought about it some more. In order to use the better device, he'd have to do some setup. He'd have to run multiple programs to get things working right.

Or he could run iTunes.

i'm not particularly happy at the moment.

Apple just got more of my money.
