:: Brilliant… But Stoooopid.

One of my co-workers had a brilliant idea. Granted, any metro that actually
did this would be insane, but hey, brilliant is brilliant.

His idea? Well, if you drive around enough, you'll encounter those freeway rumble strips. They usually are located somewhere between the blinking lights and huge signs telling drivers to slow down, and the road crews pulling the wreck of someone's SUV back up the embankment. Chances are, they're the same ones generally ignored by the drivers of said soon to be ex-vehicles as they wonder what's causing that extra bass noise coming from their iPod.

So he was thinking that those strips are a missed opportunity. Yeah, they rumble, but then, that's the basis of any sound. He reasoned that a little bit of math and you could turn that into a 60mph Close and Play.

Think of it, some moron goes rolling over those and it's the voice of God informing him to "Slow Down, Moron". (Granted, if you actually are driving slow, you get something that sounds more like the back track to a Blue Oyster Cult record, but hey, the price of progress is sometimes results in a 80 year old nun thinking her Pinto is possessed.

(And let's hope that they don't drive over the strips backwards and start thinking the dog has some good advice after all.)

But, potentially disturbing road hazard warnings aren't the only opportunity presented here, there's also promotional opportunites as folks on the Jersey Turnpike are welcomed to Bay-ooo-tiful Ozone Park (and to please roll up their windows and refrain from taking breathing for then next 30 miles or so.) Possibly even ads from Goodyear for all those tires that you're rapidly eating the tread off of.

Like i said, absolutely brilliant idea that no clear thinking municipality would ever do.

i expect it to be available next year.
