i think i need a new chair.

Mind you, i've had my current office chair since.. i'm not exactly sure how long. i think i got it when i came out to California, which means about 10 years. It's not a bad chair. It's got a nice stiff back, lots of pivot points that let me adjust my posture to any number of ways. Considering that i spend an inordinate amount of time sitting in it, that's a pretty good thing. (Seriously, i think i've clocked something like 25K hours sitting in it.)

The problem is that most of the padding has gone out of it. So while comfy, it ain't as comfy as it once was. Mind you, a few folks have said that you want something like that since it encourages you to sit correctly and also get up from the damn desk every once in a while.

Still, once you realize that you've placed your posterior in the same impression for three years, you start to think about that maybe spending a buck or two on a new seat. Thing is, i like shopping for chairs about as much as i like to shop for cars. i think that's just a little more than i like eating glass.

i hate it because it's not like you can go somewhere and actually try out chairs. You have to go to dozens of places. What's worse is that for some unknown reason, they all insist on trying to sell you some leather upholstered "executive" chair that lets you lean back.

i don't lean back. i lean forward. Often dramatically so. "Leaning back" consists of sitting at a 90° angle. And trust me, anyone who's driven by a stockyard knows why keeping ruminant flesh warm and sweaty is a bad idea. (Seriously, what moron decided leather was a good thing to sit on instead of cloth?)

i suppose the best solution would be something like an Aeron chair but those things give me a case of the screaming expletives.

Oddly, i think i might be able to get a chair like the ones we have at work, which are slightly less likely to cause you to scream when you look at the pricetag. i've had mine now for at least five years and it's held up remarkably well, even though i think the ergo folks hate the fact i took the arm rests off of it and have it pitched slightly forward. A possible option, provided i can somehow figure out the depths of options i may want (and stay clear of the "HOLY SQUID FONDLER! LOOK AT THE PRICE!" territory.

Sigh.

You know, for a species that supposedly rose to it's apex by figuring out how to stand on two legs, you'd think it'd be a lot easier to find something to put your ass on.

My chair at work sucks, so I bought an Aeron for home to compensate.

I'm cheap, so it was a used one from craigslist. I like to think it came from some failed dot com. MMmmmm, Webvan.

I pinched my chair out of one of the lecture halls in our old building. It doesn't lean back or forward, nor does it have rollers (I'm sure whoever's in charge of waxing the floors would hate me, if they ever waxed the floors). It's also the best work chair I've ever sat in.

If you come to Davis, I'll cover you while you sneak into that lecture hall.
