Sigh.
So my DSL modem died last night, meaning that i'm now back to life at 50.3K.
Granted i did have a bit of fun earlier.
Hello, My name is "Chad". Can i confirm your name is J.R. ConlinYepAnd can i ask who i'm talking to?…
SidharthaThank you Si — Really? Is your name really "Chad"?No. Ah, so you're "JR"?Yep.
Eventually, someone may show up and test the line before they ship me a new modem. 'til then, if you need me, call me on my cell.
(which, is about as fast as this dial-up.)
DSL modems (at least in this corner or the US) are not standardized. That means unless you have the exact make and model that the DSL Head is expecting, you wasted your money.
To make matters worse, the two available ISPs in my area, AT&T and ComCast*, regularly run contests to see who can be the most evil company on the face of the planet.
(*There are other DSL providers, however, thanks to the Supreme Court, the folks that own the wire to your house can set whatever predatory pricing or simply deny them service at any point, meaning that, no, there aren't other providers.)
Oh, and at least one line-tech at AT&T gets high marks for honesty and pleasantry. Actually managed to state things clearly and not make me feel like a moron.
I know, I know. In my defense, I was talking to a guy that ran operations at @Home (back when they existed) and he confirmed what I thought. Granted, that was a few years back, but hey…
Fine.
I'll start hanging out in Fry's more often.
