Two half-height, very dead hard drives + 1 $3 Torx 8 screwdriver = 3 very powerful rare-earth magnets (ok 3.5. i learned that the secret to getting the magnets off is to bend the steel they're on instead of trying to twist them off with a pair of pliers.

I love the shining coasters you get from hard drives. And knowing that nobody will be able to read stuff off them, ever again, gives me a warm fuzzy feeling, too. Not that I have anything to hide, but still, I value my privacy.

Something in hard drive rare-earth magnets makes them more fragile than normal ones I've played with. They snap and shatter into nasty shards. Be careful, because super-magnetic shards are, well, nasty in unusual ways.
And yeah, I do this with all my old hard drives as well, if I don't turn the whole assembly - minus cover - into a fridge magnet.
