Ok, i admit it, i've been kinda looking forward to the end of this week.
Not just because i'd be back in San Jose, or because i'd be picking about 300lbs of oranges off the tree in the back, but because i'd be getting the round 2 presents. Those would be what i got after i returned the parental GPS unit.
Some were fairly functional, like a memory card and a hand truck, but there was one i was really interested in. That would be the iceTech battery. It's a 2500mAh/3.8V puppy, that (oh yeah) has a pair of built in solar cells. Just trying it out attached to the Toshiba USB drive it powered right up and spun without a problem. i haven't really put it through it's paces too much, mostly just running a 5v drive, but it seems pretty solid, and should be more than sufficient for extended trips or a quick recharge of some device. Probably not enough here to drive a laptop for any period of time, but definitely enough to add a few hours to the Archos, DS or the cellphone (or heck, give you a reason to get the window seat on the plane).
The other semi-surprising thing is that it feels pretty darn solid. It's reasonably light weight with nice solid hinges and a soft matte finish. The various extra bits and plugs they threw in are… interesting, but bound to be stuffed in the back of some closet somewhere (again, the value of living by the rule of USB).
i had to get mine through Sears, but you can find them cheaper on amazon.com. i'll let you know how it fares, but i'll have toys after the next quake.
