i think i have a problem.
i've got someone coming onboard to help. He's brilliant, of course, and going to be a huge help.
Provided i can divide my tasks up so that he can.
That's kind of my problem. i tend to be a bit, well, over zealous about fixing things. One of my previous bosses called me a "Hand grenade blanket", since whenever there's a messy problem nobody wants, i'm the one that generally steps up and does it. It's generally steady work (because there's always messy problems), but it's generally pretty lonely work. Mostly because some of the crap i work on i wouldn't wish on anyone.
i'm not particularly good at delegation. It's something i both never really get a chance to do and something i have little experience doing. Heh, in some respects, i think i need someone like me to come in, slap me around and tell me to back off on some stuff. i shouldn't think that, though. i should be able to hand over a list of things i'm doing, a target list of milestones that need to be accomplished.
Well, that and make sure that the stuff i work on continues to work.
Ah well, life without challenges is a life lived unfulfilled.
It's time to learn something new.
I've found the following works:
1 - Get your helper started
2 - Catch a really bad cold and miss a week or two.
3 - See what's done when you're healthy again.
Practically speaking, I think what might make sense is to spend fifteen minutes asking yourself "what would I do if there were two of me?"
Then redact that to "what would I do if there were 1.5 of me?"
Give the guy the .5.
If it works out, scale him up to 1.
I'm sure he'll kick your ass if you're out of line.

i'm dealing with the same exact situation ('cept i got two smart guys and they are both onboard already). it's hard to choose:
1) just sit and get it done myself in a few minutes
2) sit with them for hours teaching them, then having them do it, mess up, and then helping them clean it up.
i know that eventually, if i do option 2 more, they will get better, i can refocus on doing other stuff. but, it is hard since i am used to doing everything myself.
