Darn.
So a few weeks ago i was contacted by Arbitron to be part of the radio listener survey. Considering that my radio listening generally consists of MP3 tracks, podcasts, NPR and periods of KFOG during pledge weeks, i was hoping that i could do my part to ban Pop music from the airwaves. Unfortunately, because i work for a Media Company, i've been banned from participation, although i did get an exceptionally clean $7 out of the deal.
The thing i was kind of finding a bit oogy was the fact that they wanted me to carry around a little recorder. Said device would (presumably) continuously record my environment and extract info out of it that could be used to track my entertainment habits. While i somehow doubt that said monitoring involved magical radio frequency tags that don't exist, it did mean that every night i'd be sending an upload of my daily audio to some anonymous archive which would then try to piece out what i was listening to.
And there in would lie the fun.
See, i had little intention of having said device record things like company meetings or conversations. No, for that i would probably create a loop of several hours of random keyboard typing. Possibly interspersed with other sounds like godzilla roars, the aforementioned podcasts, goat noises and whatever samples i could find. Perhaps one day would consist solely of Esquivel tracks. i'd rest, comfortable in the knowledge that my tastes would represent a large portion of the San Jose Metro area, and may one day explain why a great number of radio stations now feature hits from Shonen Knife, the goat herder remix versions.
Sadly, though, my honest nature has prevented this generous effort.
Of which i'm sure the local torch and pitch fork vendors are greatly disappointed.
