::Defining Success

Mookie asks What is Success?.

To be honest, it's something i've been thinking about as well, but for other reasons. One of the biggest problems most folks face is knowing if they actually are successful. Take me, i'm being paid well, working a job i like (there are things that drive me nuts and that i'd love to change, but those are mostly out of my control), with smart people, doing things where i have some minor say in the way that they're done. i used to tell people that what i was doing was my dream job. i love being able to connect folks with ideas or use things in unexpected ways. i love talking with folks and showing off cool things whether or not i've done them. That's changed a bit, but it's to be expected.

Are there things i'd change or improve? Yes, of course. Success should never be an end, and that's kind of the problem.

Like i said, the problem with success is that very few folks know when they are successful. They may get an idea of when they were successful in the past, but quite often, they struggle to figure out whether or not they currently are. Unless they're exceptionally gifted or lucky, most folks spend their lives in states they'd consider "unsuccessful". Or they focus on various aspects where they're "not successful" instead of the areas they are.

Still, here are the answers i gave Mookie:

mookie: this may end up as a blog posting, but i wanted to ask ya
mookie: what is your definitiion of "succcess" in life?
jr: Well, "success" needs to have a fairly liberal dose of "not fail" for it to be a good thing.
jr: i'm also willing to say that success is generally more a state of mind than an actual achievement, and as such is often subject to change.
jr: You may be "happy" at one point during one point of your life, and immediately set upon the next point shortly afterwards. More the Sir Edmund Hillary Scott model, really.
jr: Likewise, "success" may consist of near constant failure, provided that each failure brings it's own level of education and helps you achieve greater gains (This would be the physicist/mad scientist scenario)
jr: Success, much like beauty and certain forms of stye, lies in the eye of the beholder.
mookie: do you consider yourself successful?
jr: Occasionally, but then i've got driving paranoia, pessimism and bouts of depression to contend with, so i'm always able to find out some way not to feel it. Looking at my current position in life, i'm working at a company that pays me well, doing things i find interesting, and where i have some say in the future, so there's little reason for me not to feel successful. There are a GREAT many things that annoy the hell out of me and i'm forever paranoid about what would happen when i look for a new job, but i can attribute those to those happy mental disorders i mentioned earlier.

Am i successful? Well, i've not died yet, i was able to eat today, and i'll be sleeping in a bed tonight. i have failed to be part of the food-chain, been featured on an episode of COPS, or have my untimely end written up for next years Darwin Awards.

So yeah, i'm successful.

Today at least.

Tomorrow, i'll probably fail.

You don't seem very successful at closing your b tags…

I plead innocent here. Wordpress was "helpfully" stripping them out for whatever reason. I had to modify the DB entry to force them back in.

Oh. Icky. I hate it when computers "help" me. I can screw up plenty fast all on my own.
