So, Microsoft announced the demise of XP in a few months. Granted, all this means is that they won't be releasing patches, bug fixes or other bits for XP anymore unless you happen to have an Asus. What this really means is that if you've managed to resist the siren song of Vista for this long, you're going to either have to upgrade, trust that nobody will crack your system, or consider alternatives.
Since i've already decided that Vista is not for me. i'm investigating the latter of those choices. Personally, i always felt that after XP i'd get out of windows. It's rather nice that most of the programs i've been using work on either pretty well.
So, tonight, i've been screwing around with KUbuntu 8 on my main desktop, and oddly, it's been working pretty well.
There are a few glitches like i can't run my second monitor as a second monitor off my video card, so i have to unplug the smaller one, and i think i just crashed my window manager, but by and large, things appear to be working. i'm not sure this is what i expected or not, but i'm going to work with it none the less.
Well, once June rolls around…
The vista partitioner will screw its own partitions, and possibly others … dunno if there even are partitioners which would respect its "I'll grab WAY more than the 64 whatnots that other partition programs use for their first bits" thingy.
I'm hazy on the details, cos I wouldn't touch it with a 6'2" Pole, even if I had one.

I decided to switch to MacOS… although linux+compiz fusion and kde wasn't a bad setup either. And its good to have an 8 core machine in case I ever have to render a pixar film ;)
