One of the local churches had a full press ad spread for their "autumn family fair" held last night. Most of my neighbors porch lights were off (or didn't even have a pumpkin). Topping it all off, it was raining.
So, yeah, having a couple of dozen kids show up, while disappointing, is kinda understandable. And yeah, i never stopped any kid from taking more than one full sized candybar and lightstick, and i dressed for the occasion.
i still hold that Halloween is more than just candy and costumes. It's the one holiday that is absolutely about your community. It's about your neighbors. It's about trust. It's about finding out if the realtor lied about how great a neighborhood you moved into. It's about facing the criminals, pedophiles, rapists and other boogie men you imagine live a block away and finding out that like the monster in the closet, it's more your imagination than reality.
So yeah, even if nobody else wants to play, i will. More than anyone else. Maybe i might even spark a competitive note with some of the folks that visit or a smile from someone some other day, or maybe i might be the reasons someone else is happy they moved here.
Now, if you'll excuse me, i'm going to egg and toiletpaper the poopy heads who didn't give candy last night.
I'm always impressed (and envious) of the lengths you go to for halloween. Looks like you had a good one this year - and that costume? May have to steal the idea for next year!

After three years of having candy on hand, with a grand total of 2 kids showing up on that first year and none the subsequent two, I didn't even bother this year. It made me kinda sad, but what's to be done?
